Virgie's Place, 1965

Jessie and Virgie Handsborough opened on Gessner Road in 1965 — a neighborhood hangout for west Houston teenagers. From day one, the Handsborough name meant showing up for the community.

A Corner Store, A Community

Virgie's Place became Handsborough Grocery, serving the same neighbors through 1998. The business changed; the commitment to that block never did.

Adrian Lights the Pit

In 2005, Adrian opened Virgie's Bar-B-Que — named for his mother, built on decades of cooking together. A family tradition finally given its own address.

Houston Takes Notice

Texas Monthly named Virgie's one of the Top 50 BBQ joints in Texas. Houston's regulars had already figured that out long before any list said so.
